Concept

Biotechnology is the translation of biological discoveries into sustainable technologies for human life. It comprises industrial, agricultural, medical and other technological applications. Biotechnology is an exciting and rapidly developing interdisciplinary discipline and there is an increasing demand for biotechnologists in many branches of industry such as pharmaceutical, chemical, health-care, and food industry.

Jacobs University Bremen provides an innovative Biotechnology program at the interface of science and engineering. Its curriculum is well designed, based on the relevance of current life-science research and the demand of industry.

In addition to the basic principles of science and engineering, students will be trained in the cutting edge technologies of genetic and metabolic engineering, bioprocess design and control, downstream processing, biocatalyst design and high-throughput screening.

To ensure a comprehensive understanding of real-life biotechnology, opportunities for internships in reputable companies are available. A third year BSc thesis encourages students to perform independent research studies.

Courses

During the first year, general (introductory) lectures and lab courses are mandatory. As outlined in the handbook, the students select more courses from a variety of electives from the School of Engineering and Science (SES) or from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS). In addition, so-called University Studies Courses (USCs) have to be selected which are taught by professors from both Schools. They are unique in that here perspectives from apparently different areas of science are brought together.

Career Options

Due to the rapid development in this field, there is an increasing demand and in fact a shortage of professionals in biotechnology. Biotechnologists thus have a wide spectrum of career opportunities, ranging from research to engineering and management. These include positions as researchers, bioprocess engineers, biochemical engineers, consultants, marketers and managers. Jacobs University Bremen attracts talents from all over the world to pursue its undergraduate and graduate programs in life sciences and nanobiotechnology. We endeavor to create a research environment that cultivates independent thinking, analytical skills, creativity, innovation, and communication skills. Choose biotechnology and keep your career options
open.
