Concept
Biochemistry is the study of the molecules and chemical processes in living organisms. Cell Biology studies the structure and physiology of cells, their component parts, and their interactions with the environment.
At Jacobs University, these two fields of study are integrated into one comprehensive program through which students acquire a broad understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that form the basis of life.
The BCCB curriculum was designed to educate competent and independently thinking scientists. From the first week, students are enrolled in both lecture and laboratory courses taught by full-time professors, research instructors and university lecturers, who are committed to excellence in research and teaching. In the first year, students gain an introductory overview of the entire field. The general perspective is broadened and deepened in the second year. Third year students attend specialized lectures and work in the research laboratories. Elective courses allow them to develop further academic and research interests.
Courses
During the first year, general (introductory) lectures and lab courses are mandatory. As outlined in the handbook, the students select more courses from a variety of electives from the School of Engineering and Science (SES) or from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS). In addition, so-called University Studies Courses (USCs) have to be selected which are taught by professors from both Schools. They are unique in that here perspectives from apparently different areas of science are brought together.

Career Options
A Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from Jacobs University forms the solid foundation for success in further education and career, be it in industry or in the academic world. This is because BCCB students at Jacobs University acquire first-rate expertise and practical skills for successful international careers in the life sciences. Since the faculty to student ratio is high, students receive individual advice on their plans. Most of our graduates continue at the very best graduate schools in Germany, the UK, the US, and other countries.
